His father owned a seafood restaurant on Galveston Island. In his free time, Tilman peeled shrimp there. In 1974, the boy moved to Houston, where he attended Westchester High School.

Fertitta attended Texas Tech University and the University of Houston, studying business administration and hotel management. However, he never graduated. Being a student, Tilman became involved in entrepreneurship, including promoting and selling Shaklee vitamins.

Landry’s, Inc.

In the 1980s, Fertitta opened a construction and development business and built the Key Largo Hotel in Galveston. He later sold the hotel to become a partner in Landry’s Seafood, which was opened by brothers Bill and Floyd Landry in Katy, near Houston. A year later, Tillman helped open a more upscale restaurant in Houston, Willie G’s Seafood & Steaks.

In 1986, the entrepreneur received controlling stakes in these two establishments. Two years later, he became the sole owner of the Landry’s. In 1993, he took the company public, valuing it at $30 million. Then, it began to grow rapidly. Fertitta quickly standardized the style and menu of his restaurants, removed Cajun spices from most dishes and improved the interior of Willie G’s Seafood & Steaks. In 2010, he bought out all the shares and became the sole owner.

During the 1990s, Landry’s expanded into restaurant, entertainment, hotel and gaming businesses. In 1999, Landry’s bought land on the Texas Gulf Coast Kemah Boardwalk to build a theme park there. Subsequently, the company acquired several more attractions and entertainment facilities. In 2005, Landry’s expanded into casinos and bought the luxury casino chain Golden Nugget Casinos. In 2000, the corporation acquired land in downtown Houston as a result of a deal to redevelop the fire station. After reconstruction in 2003, an aquarium with sharks and a new restaurant appeared in the city.

In 2015, Fertitta added the Villas at San Luis hotel section to the company, which consists of ultra-luxurious villas with direct beach and pool access. Tillman’s love for the hospitality industry is evident in his commitment to providing exceptional guest experiences at his hotels, restaurants, resorts and casinos.

As of 2023, Landry’s is a multi-brand food, hospitality, entertainment and gaming corporation headquartered in Houston.
