The saying “home is where the heart is” applies to many things in life, especially when it comes to sports clubs, and soccer is no exception. Nearly every city worldwide has its local idols and heroes. In Madrid, it’s Real; in Milan, Inter and AC Milan; in Munich, Bayern; in London, Chelsea and Arsenal; and in Kyiv, Dynamo. For Houstonians, the name “Dynamo” holds a similar prestige as the local club has become a source of pride. Clubs bearing the name “Dynamo” have a long history and are celebrated around the globe, each with unique stories and achievements. Let’s dive into the history of Houston’s Dynamo here on i-houston.

The Birth and Early Days of a Legend

The year 2005 will always be remembered by Houston soccer fans as the year their beloved team was born, winning the hearts and minds of local fans soon after. The founding of Houston’s beloved Dynamo came as a result of events that had occurred just a bit earlier. The San Jose Earthquakes, established in 1994, relocated to Houston due to various challenges. The coaching staff, team personnel, and players left behind their previous club identity, adopting a new name, logo, and fresh chapter in soccer history.

Initially, the club was named “Houston 1836,” a nod to local history, but this title didn’t resonate well with all Houstonians. The name, adopted on January 25, 2006, referenced the city’s founding year and featured the image of historical figure Sam Houston. However, this branding faced considerable criticism from Houston’s Latino population. The year 1836 is notable as the end of the Texas War for Independence and Texas’s separation from Mexico, so with much of the fan base being of Latino descent, the club rebranded as Dynamo. The name Dynamo itself ties back to Houston’s energy industry and was inspired by the historical team “Houston Dynamos.” The team’s black-and-orange colors echo those of Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk, although the official team colors on their website are noted as light blue, complemented by the logo’s bold palette.

A Rapid Rise to Success

When it comes to early years, sports franchises are typically expected to find their footing before achieving major victories. But Dynamo seemed eager to defy expectations, skipping the “warm-up” phase and diving directly into contention for top titles.

In its first two years, the club soared, winning the MLS Championship twice in 2006 and 2007. Four and five years later, they reached the finals again, taking home silver as league runners-up.

For passionate fans and those who know the team’s history, Dynamo has consistently won trophies across various leagues, from the Western and Eastern Conferences and the North American SuperLiga to the Supporters’ Shield. Wherever there are titles to chase, Houston’s Dynamo has been in the mix.

At first glance, it may seem that fans at BBVA Compass Stadium witness only victories. But true fans know that being part of the Dynamo family means sticking with the team through highs and lows. Throughout its history, Dynamo has shown itself to be a club with fierce ambitions, and fans can look forward to celebrating even greater achievements in the future.

Soccer has long been regarded as the king of sports, with its roots traced back to Britain in 1863—or so all sports history claims.
