The history of professional American football in Houston begins in 1960. At that time, Bud Adams created the Houston Oilers as a charter member of the AFL. First in the League and later as part of the American Football Conference, the team had a long and successful history. The Oilers captured Houstonians’ hearts and played a crucial role in the city’s identity. The team ended its existence when Bud Adams relocated it to Tennessee in 1996. In 1999, it was renamed Tennessee Titans.
In 1997, American businessman and philanthropist Bob McNair intended to bring the NFL back to Houston. It should be mentioned that the NFL is a professional league in North America that integrates all football teams in the country. McNair founded Houston NFL Holdings the following year.
Bob, cooperating with the city authorities, drafted a plan for building a stadium with a retractable roof. It was designed for the potential team. Then he offered his idea to the NFL. During the summer of 1999, McNair concentrated on expanding the football team. In September, he was instructed to prepare for the upcoming meeting of the NFL owners in Atlanta. At a meeting held on October 6, 1999, the owners voted unanimously to grant McNair an NFL franchise for an unprecedented sum of $700 million.
On September 6, 2000, the franchise was officially named the Houston Texans. Dom Capers was appointed the Houston Texans’ first head coach on January 21, 2001.
Major achievements
The Texans had their debut official game on September 8, 2002. During their first match, the team defeated the Dallas Cowboys with a 19–10 score. Since the Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears in 1961, it was the first time when a new franchise’s team won its opening match.
